FASTING THE DAY OF ^ASHURA'

^Ashura' Day is the 10th day of Muharram. The scholars of Islam have unanimously agreed that fasting this day is a sunnah (optional and rewardable) deed. Prophet Muhammad mentioned that the small sins of the previous year will be forgiven for the one who fasts the Day of ^Ashura'. He urged Muslims to also fast the day before ^Ashura' by saying: "If I were to live until Muharram of next year, I will fast its ninth (and tenth)."

Among the many Islamically important events that happened on the Day of ^Ashura' over time are:

  • - Allah saved Prophet Moses and his Muslim followers from the evil of Pharaoh by drowning the latter and his huge army.
  • - Allah accepted Prophet Adam's repentance after he had committed the small non-abject sin of eating from the forbidden tree in Paradise.
  • - After the water of the great flood receded, Prophet Noah's Ark landed safely on Mount Al-Judiyy in Iraq.
  • - In the year 61 H, Imam Al-Husayn, the son of Imam ^Aliyy, was martyred with many of his family members in Karbala' (Iraq).
  • - In the year 4 H,"Dhatur-Riqa^" Ghazwah (Campaign) took place.
  • - Allah saved Prophet Abraham from Nimrod in Iraq.
  • - Prophet Job (Ayyub) was cured of his 18-year illness.
