GLOSSARY - DEFINITIONS

The meanings of the words that are mentioned in this Glossary are the ones which closely pertain to the text in the Summary. The words are listed in English alphabetical order (see Transliteration System).

The definite article is added to the Arabic words, wherever proper, to help the reader know the correct way of adding it, in accordance with the rules of the shamsiyy and qamariyy letters: When the definite article "al-" ال precedes a word starting with a shamsiyy letter, its "l" ل is not pronounced or written (in English) and the shamsiyy letter is doubled. For example, the word "dalil" دَليل becomes "ad-dalil" الدَّليل (not al-dalil) because "d" د is a shamsiyy letter. On the other hand, the word "hilal" هِلال becomes "al-hilal" الهِلال because the letter "h" هـ is a qamariyy letter. We add the apostrophe ' after "al-" to indicate that the hamzah (followed by a vowel) letter after it is pronounced distinctly, like in the word "al-'imam" الإمَام On the other hand, the absence of the apostrophe means that the sound of the hamzah is absent, like in the word "al-ijtihad" الاجْتِهَاد; it is pronounced as "alijtihad" and not "al-'ijtihad" الإجْتِهَاد
